AFA and MICPA successfully organised the 22nd AFA Conference
The ASEAN Federation of Accountants (AFA) together with the Myanmar Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) successfully organised the 22nd AFA Conference. The Conference is AFAs biennial event and an important platform for learning and sharing, aimed to provide ASEAN accountants and stakeholders with global insights on current topics relevant to the ASEAN accountancy profession. "With a network of more than 3 million accountants worldwide, AFA is committed to bring the best of resources available in this network to our ASEAN accountants" said Wan Tin (President, AFA) in his opening address.
Focusing on the theme of "Redefining our value: The future ASEAN accountants", the Conference was a culmination of AFAs discussions in 2021 on three priority topics of sustainability and the changing reporting landscape, Small and Medium Practices (SMPs) technological skills and competencies, and capacity building of ASEAN accountants and the ASEAN accountancy profession. Among the speakers participating in the panel discussions were Masamichi Kono (Trustee, IFRS Foundation), Hajah Chairani binti Haji Sulaiman (Chair, ASEAN CPA Coordinating Committee), and Fann Kor (CEO-Designate, ISCA).
As highlighted by H.E. Dato Lim Jock Hoi (Secretary-General, ASEAN) in his keynote address, "The Conference, with its chosen theme provides an excellent opportunity for all stakeholders to discuss and redefine the role of ASEAN accountants in the region’s recovery process. AFA has become a hub for closer relation and regional cooperation among ASEAN accountants and contributed immensely to the development of the accountancy profession in the region".
"Many reasons to be optimistic, especially because of the talent and the entrepreneurship spirit of the youth of Southeast Asia, and there are many things that the profession can do to prepare for a brighter future. With our professions long-standing commitment to ethical integrity, professional scepticism, and the public interest, I am confident that we will succeed" said Alan Johnson (President, IFAC) in his address.
The Conference was also a milestone for AFAs leadership, with the official handing over ceremony of the AFA presidency from President Wan Tin of the Myanmar Institute of Certified Public Accountants (2020-2021) to President Voravit Janthanakul of the Federation of Accounting Professions of Thailand (2022-2023). President Voravit will officially take over the presidency on January 1, 2022.
Attended by participants from 16 countries, the 22nd AFA Conference was fully supported by Event Partners: Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), and Event Facilitator: Institute of Indonesia Chartered Accountants (IAI). AFA would like to thank our Event Partners and Event Facilitator for their full support and contribution to the Conference.
